When I joined Looker my primary task was to build a design team and design presence at Looker while increasing product reach by overhauling and simplifying product user experience for a this late stage business intelligence software start up.

A year and a half later, we have released numerous design-focused upgrades and introduced new features that appeal to a new audience of business users, including a content permission mechanism, upgraded visualization tooling, style guide, improved mobile experience, overhauled dashboards and a content discovery system. All aimed to capture interest and increase usage by business users and simplify usage of a very complex and technical data modeling and analytics tool.

These new features are enabling a new audience to customize their data journies and data interactions in a variety of ways.

AM Dashboard Experience

Integration with other applications like Slack and Salesforce is helping to personalize experiences for business users. Giving the user a map of what to do next starts to ensure that Looker stays not only the starting point for users each day, but an action-oriented and business critical focal point as well.

Content Discovery

The Sr. UX team that I lead is working on a number of innovative ways to help users find content that is relevant and personalized for them. That focus has become a key design team focus that release by release is working to systematically improve reach.

JOIN 2016

Talal Assir, Head of Field Analytics at Looker and me onstage at JOIN 2016 giving a presentation about how to build better dashboards. It was a session that really resonated with attendees. Our customers are very interested in telling meaningful stories with their data. We just need to keep filling in the gaps and smoothing out the rough edges.

About Me

I love an impossible challenge. The harder the problem, the more I and the teams I build and lead lean in. What’s your design challenge?

Let’s make something together.
